Today was early release day.  We didn't get the time to complete our blog as a class.  Hopefully we can find time in our schedule to complete our blog as a group next week.

Today we got to go outside for science!  Yesterday at 3:00 we traced our shadows.  Today at 12:00 we went out again and re-drew our shadows.  Students noticed that their shadows were slanted in a different direction.  We concluded that our shadows tilted because the sun had changed it's position in the sky.  We also talked about why the sun is at it's highest point during the winter.

During math we talked about the sign between the parentheses changes the answer.

During writing we worked on finishing our drafts for our narratives or realistic fiction pieces.

Our 3rd graders rocked their math quiz today!

Tomorrow Miss W will be gone to work on her own school work.  Have a great 3 day weekend!

Cool websites for students!

I've been browsing the "net" for some cool websites that students can use that will:
1.  Help their learning.
2.  That are fun.
3.  That parents can easily monitor.

Here is a list of cool websites that are Miss W approved!

www.freerice.com  Vocabulary questions that help raise rice for impoverished parts of the world!
www.kidsknowit.com  A great site that links to tons of activities, games, and other websites.
www.commoncorepages.com  Math worksheets that fit every topic your student will need from K-5 and beyond.

More coming soon!

Happy Birthday Hannah!

Today Hannah's mom and dad brought cupcakes for the class!  We love sugar in Room 9!!!!! (except maybe Miss W and Mrs Windsor)

Today in reading we read for events in a historical, informational text.

Today in writing 4th graders worked on drafting.  3rd graders went back to back and shared stories.  One partner told their story while the other asked questions about details that were missing.

In math Mrs Windsor's group worked on subtracting to the thousands place.  Miss Wortham's group worked on writing an equation to an unknown variable.  Groups also worked on writing equations with parentheses (and the part in the parentheses goes first)

For example:

Hannah's mom brought 2 kinds of cupcakes.  Each flavor had 3 rows and 5 columns.  How many cupcakes were there in all?

(3 X 5) + (3 X 5) = C  OR (thanks Reagan) (3 X 5) X 2=

C = 30 cupcakes

Tues 9/24

Today we met our YouthFriend! Our YouthFriend's name is Mamma Wortham.  She's awesome, fun, crazy about oranges, and just like Miss Wortham.  She makes math fun by using food; and she's Miss Wortham's mom!

In writing we worked on drafting our personal narratives or our realistic fiction.

In reading we read for important people in informational text.

In math we worked on writing equations for word problems.

For example:  Mamma Wortham gave Kail 10 oranges and Jackson B 8 oranges.  Jackson and Kail gave Lola 16 oranges.  How many oranges are left?

How many oranges are left =   (8 oranges + 10 oranges ) - 16 oranges

Leopard trade in was today!  Your student can trade in every Tuesday afternoon.
